How To Know If The Color You Chose Is Right
The biggest struggle that homeowners face when choosing color for their homes, is that the paint companies who should be your advocate in all of this, has not made it very easy for you. They expect that an average homeowner, who is not a trained color specialist, can choose paint color for a whole room from a tiny 2x2 digitally colored piece of cardboard. That is a setup for making the wrong choices every time.
The first thing to note is that you should never pick color from one of the tiny single color sample cards. The single cards will not indicate what the true color undertone is, unless you are trained to spot undertones. Start by using the long sample cards that have multiple colors. That will help narrow down your choices. You will get a better handle of the color undertone by looking at the darkest color toward the bottom of the card. That is a good rule of thumb but not always the case.
Now that you have narrowed down the colors you like, choose 2-3 colors and purchase the small paint samples. You will also need 11x14 white cardboard or foam core boards that you can find at any craft store. Paint a couple of coats of each color on each board, and use them as the samples. This is a truer indication of the paint color, because it is actual paint and not a digital version of the paint. They can easily be moved around to different areas of your home with different light exposures.
This is the best way to choose paint color for your home. Whites and blues are especially difficult to read, and most homeowners get those wrong.
